Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham failed to capitalise on a crucial opportunity to secure their Premier League status. Following a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on the 37th matchday, the London club now faces a nail-biting wait until the final Sunday fixture to determine their fate.

Chelsea’s goals, netted by Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos, ultimately proved decisive against the Spurs, despite Richarlison managing to pull one back. The loss was undoubtedly frustrating for De Zerbi, yet he was quick to defend his squad’s performance. “We carved out a significant early chance through Tel, but Sanchez made a crucial save,” De Zerbi commented. “We remained competitive until their second goal, which stemmed from a rather naive loss of possession. Overall, I believe we delivered a strong performance, even though the result went against us.”

The Italian tactician then shifted his focus to the upcoming decisive home fixture against Everton. “Now is not the time to dwell too much on this particular game,” he asserted. “Our priority must be to prepare for the next, pivotal match in front of our home supporters. We need to demonstrate our quality, character, pride, and courage to bounce back. I remain confident, as our display today was commendable.”

Tottenham currently holds a two-point advantage over West Ham, who are set to host Leeds on the final day of the season. Should teams finish level on points, goal difference will be the deciding factor, where the Spurs possess a clear edge (-10 compared to West Ham’s -22). Consequently, De Zerbi’s destiny remains firmly within his grasp, though there is absolutely no margin for error come Sunday.
