De zerbi: tottenham’s everton clash for premier league survival is ‘more vital than a trophy’

de zerbi: tottenham’s everton clash for premier league survival is ‘more vital than a trophy’

Following Tottenham’s 1-2 loss to Chelsea on Tuesday, manager Roberto De Zerbi emphasized the immense significance of Sunday’s upcoming match against Everton. He declared this crucial fixture for Premier League survival to be “more important than a trophy,” a direct comparison to the Europa League title the London club secured last season.

After their recent 1-2 defeat at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea on Tuesday, Tottenham Hotspur, currently positioned 17th in the Premier League with 38 points, finds itself in a precarious relegation battle. Their top-flight status is under serious threat from West Ham, who sit 18th with 36 points. Consequently, the Spurs face a decisive encounter for their Premier League future against Everton this Sunday at 5 p.m., while West Ham will simultaneously host Leeds in another critical fixture.

Tottenham’s coach, Roberto De Zerbi, underscored the monumental stakes of this 38th-round match. He stated, “Sunday is the final for Tottenham. Not in Bilbao against Manchester United (in the Europa League last season). The most important match is Sunday.” The 46-year-old Italian tactician further elaborated on the gravity of the situation: “Now, we are playing for something more than a trophy. It’s for the pride of the club and its history. (…) It’s about dignity.”

Almost exactly one year ago, the North London side salvaged a disastrous Premier League campaign, finishing 17th, by triumphing over Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final — the club’s first major title since 2008. Instead of building on that success as a springboard for improvement, the English club has faltered this season and now faces the grim prospect of relegation to the Championship for the first time since 1977.

De Zerbi maintains positive outlook

Tottenham, having secured only two home victories this season, absolutely must avoid defeat against the Toffees. The former Olympique Marseille coach (2024-2026) remains hopeful. “I would like us to play Sunday like we did during the last 20 minutes (on Tuesday), where we showed more energy, more passion, something more within us,” he declared.

“Every one of them is focused on the objective. They work hard during the week, and each of us wants to achieve the goal. I think we are playing a final (on Sunday), an important match, but in our stadium… So we must stay alive. But it’s a great day for us,” he concluded.

Tottenham’s Premier League survival conditions:

  • They avoid defeat against Everton.
  • They lose to Everton, but West Ham fails to beat Leeds.

Tottenham faces Championship relegation if:

  • They lose to Everton AND West Ham secures a victory against Leeds.
