• london braces for relegation drama

This Sunday, a high-stakes encounter sees Everton travel to North London to face Tottenham, currently sitting 17th in the table. The Spurs are precariously positioned, just two points clear of West Ham, who occupy the final relegation spot. While Tottenham needs only a single point to guarantee their survival, their recent inconsistencies could be exposed by an Everton side determined to secure a lucrative top-half finish. This pivotal final matchday also features West Ham’s crucial clash against Leeds United, a game the Hammers must win to harbor any hope of a last-ditch escape from the drop.

• moyes prioritizes everton’s finish while eyeing former club’s survival

The Everton boss openly shared his desire for his former club to avoid relegation, yet underscored that his primary responsibilities lie with Merseyside. Ahead of the critical trip to North London, Moyes stated, “I would genuinely love to see West Ham remain in the Premier League if I can contribute. However, my immediate focus is on ensuring Everton secures a top-half finish, allowing us to earn additional millions in prize money, which is vital for the club. Often, one only truly appreciates their league position years down the line, perhaps five or six years later.”

• enduring connections to the claret and blue

The 63-year-old Scottish manager holds a profound emotional connection to the Hammers, having guided them through two separate tenures, from November 2017 to June 2024. His second spell notably culminated in a historic continental triumph: leading West Ham to the Europa Conference League title after a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina in Prague on June 7, 2023. Despite these strong ties, Moyes’s immediate objective remains concluding the current season on a high note with Everton, even as the Merseyside club navigates a challenging six-match winless streak.

• a final day reckoning

Moyes’s squad faces a significant historical challenge this weekend; they have secured only one victory in their last 16 Premier League visits to Tottenham’s home ground. Simultaneously, the struggling Spurs must desperately avoid a repeat of last season’s dismal final day performance, which concluded with a crushing 4-1 defeat to Brighton. Once the final whistle blows on these crucial fixtures, the football world’s attention will invariably shift towards national team selections, as preparations for the upcoming World Cup intensify.
