Dakar hosts 85th african parliamentary union session, ousmane sonko champions pan-african ideal

85ᵉ session de l’Union Parlementaire Africaine: Ousmane Sonko souhaite voir «avancer l’idéal panafricain»
Dakar is poised to host the 85th Session of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union on June 3 and 4, 2026. With delegations from across the continent set to arrive within 24 hours, Ousmane Sonko, the esteemed President of Senegal’s National Assembly, has issued a powerful statement to his parliamentary counterparts, expressing his profound hope that the upcoming deliberations will significantly advance the enduring Pan-African ideal across our continent.

“In an era where our continent faces numerous complex challenges, bolstering parliamentary cooperation stands as an undeniable imperative. I am firmly convinced that Africa’s destiny will be forged by Africans themselves, in unwavering adherence to their values, aspirations, and interests. It is my sincere wish that our collective efforts during this session will propel forward the Pan-African vision, a legacy entrusted to us by preceding generations, to which we remain deeply committed,” Sonko articulated in his message.

This pivotal gathering is expected to bring together more than a hundred parliamentarians, comprising both deputies and senators, representing nearly sixteen African nations. Notably, this event marks Ousmane Sonko’s inaugural leadership role in such a significant international forum since his overwhelming election as President of the National Assembly on May 26, 2026, where he secured an impressive 99.25% of the votes, with 132 out of 133 electors supporting his mandate.
