Historic initiative to honor women’s role in Côte d’Ivoire’s development
The Femme Ivoirienne en Politique (FIP) organization has launched the inaugural National Week of Women Builders of the Nation, a four-day event running from August 1 to 4, 2026, coinciding with Côte d’Ivoire’s 66th Independence Day. The kickoff ceremony took place on July 30 at the Yopougon town hall, setting the stage for a week dedicated to celebrating women’s achievements and addressing future challenges.
Theme and objectives of the week-long celebration
Under the theme « 66 years of independence: what gains for women and what prospects for tomorrow? », this initiative aims to highlight women’s contributions to the country’s political, economic, social, and cultural progress. It also seeks to foster dialogue on persistent obstacles and propose actionable solutions to strengthen public policies benefiting women.
Key activities and discussions
From August 1 to 3, a series of events will unfold at the Yopougon town hall, including:
- A national symposium featuring an opening panel and 16 thematic discussions covering topics such as women’s leadership, health, education, economic empowerment, youth, and gender rights;
- An exhibition showcasing the journeys of pioneering women and successful female-led entrepreneurship projects;
- The drafting of a white paper summarizing recommendations for policymakers to ensure follow-up on proposed solutions.
A tribute to 66 women pioneers
The week will culminate in a gala dinner on August 4 at the Sofitel Hôtel Ivoire, where 66 women will be honored for their significant contributions to Côte d’Ivoire’s development since 1960. This recognition underscores the nation’s commitment to acknowledging the indispensable role of women in nation-building.
Rebecca Yao’s vision for an annual event
The president of Femme Ivoirienne en Politique, Rebecca Yao, emphasized the importance of making this initiative a recurring annual event. « Before introducing new proposals, we will revisit the resolutions from each previous edition to assess progress and ensure accountability », she stated. This approach aims to create a sustainable platform for reflection, dialogue, and recognition of women’s contributions to the nation’s progress.
Local support and long-term impact
The Yopougon deputy, Mireille Bamba, expressed strong support for the initiative, reinforcing the backing of the deputy-mayor Adama Bictogo. Organizers hope this week will become a permanent fixture in Côte d’Ivoire’s calendar, fostering ongoing conversations about women’s roles in shaping the country’s future.
