Controversial strategy of diomaye faye’s political pool raises concerns

In a move far beyond routine administrative reshuffles, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is quietly constructing a network of loyal officials under what insiders dub the “Diomaye-compatible pool” strategy. This long-term plan aims to embed steadfast supporters throughout government agencies and public institutions, potentially reshaping the political landscape in the process.

The approach has sparked unease even among the president’s own supporters. By systematically replacing officials with ties to opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, the government risks draining the Patriotic Front (Pastef) of its most influential figures. This could leave the party marginalized in institutions it helped establish, despite its pivotal role in recent political victories.

internal divisions over governance choices

Disagreements have surfaced within Pastef’s inner circle regarding the president’s refusal to include Sonko’s allies in the new cabinet. Some, like former minister Birame Souleye Diop—a key party figure—advocated for maintaining a presence of patriotic representatives in the executive branch. Their concern? That once appointed, ministers might become absorbed into the presidential orbit rather than remaining aligned with the party’s core values.

An opposition analyst, who requested anonymity, framed Sonko’s decision as strategic. By keeping his ministers out of government, the opposition leader may have aimed to prevent them from being gradually co-opted by the presidency—a scenario that could weaken Pastef’s independence.

a calculated gamble with high stakes

The strategy unfolds against a backdrop of escalating tensions between Faye and Sonko, fueled by disputes over constitutional reforms. Whether this “pool” approach will solidify the president’s political base or further fracture an already divided coalition remains uncertain. One thing is clear: the battle for control over administrative and political levers has entered a decisive phase.
