Cholera outbreak in Chad claims 13 lives, over 230 cases confirmed
Chad is grappling with a worsening cholera epidemic that has already claimed the lives of 13 individuals and infected 239 others. Health authorities have launched an urgent vaccination campaign in response to the outbreak, which has spread to two provinces, including the capital, N’Djamena.
Outbreak declared after mid-june fatalities
The cholera epidemic was officially declared on July 24, following the first deaths recorded in mid-June. The outbreak has primarily affected the Hadjer Lamis province in northern Chad, as well as the capital city, N’Djamena. Health officials report that 13 people have died, while 239 cases have been confirmed.
Vaccination campaign targets 50,000 people
In an effort to curb the spread of the disease, health authorities have initiated a vaccination drive. More than 50,000 individuals have already received their first dose of the cholera vaccine. The Ministry of Health has emphasized the critical need for improved access to clean drinking water and sanitation infrastructure, as these remain key challenges in preventing further transmission of the infectious disease.
Cholera transmission and treatment
Cholera spreads through contaminated water or food and can be effectively managed with rapid rehydration therapy. In severe cases, antibiotics are administered. Without prompt treatment, the disease can lead to fatalities within hours. Chad is not alone in facing this crisis. Several African nations, including the Central African Republic, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, have recently reported cholera outbreaks.
