The 99th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army of China was recently marked in Libreville, highlighting a deepening bond between China and Gabon. The event, held at the Chinese embassy, underscored both nations’ commitment to peace and shared progress, coinciding with the 52nd year since diplomatic relations were established between Libreville and Beijing.
In his address, China’s ambassador to Gabon, Zhou Ping, emphasized the strength of the current cooperation between the two countries. He also announced a significant milestone: Gabon’s President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has been invited to visit China in November 2025 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. This visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral ties.
The ambassador took the opportunity to reflect on China’s upcoming centennial milestones in 2026, including the 90th anniversary of the Long March victory and the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. He praised the party’s historic role in shaping modern China, stating:
“For over a century, the Communist Party of China has led the nation and its armed forces in achieving extraordinary feats for national independence, economic growth, and the realization of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era.”
In a world marked by instability and conflict, the ambassador reaffirmed China’s dedication to global peace and dialogue. He highlighted the “four global initiatives” proposed by President Xi Jinping, which focus on development, security, cultural exchange, and international governance—positions he described as “China’s wisdom for global peace and prosperity.”
Two standout examples of collaboration were cited: the 2024 visit of the “Peace Ark,” China’s hospital ship, which completed its second humanitarian stop in Gabon, and the recent hosting of a Chinese military medical mission in Libreville. These efforts have revitalized defense partnerships between the two nations. The event also served as an introduction to the newly appointed Chinese military attaché in Gabon, Colonel Zhang Song.
