Chad denies un claims of civilian deaths in Lake Chad strikes

The Chadian government has categorically denied allegations from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights regarding civilian casualties in military operations conducted in the Lake Chad Basin against Boko Haram militants. The statement was delivered in N’Djamena by Government Spokesperson and Minister of Communication, Gassim Chérif Mahamat.

Government dismisses UN accusations as baseless attacks

During a press briefing, the spokesperson condemned the allegations as an attempt to undermine the credibility of the Chadian armed forces, arguing that such claims tarnish the reputation and dignity of national military personnel. He emphasized that Chad’s military remains fully committed to combating terrorism across the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin, an area plagued by recurrent attacks from armed groups for years.

Military operations conducted with strict adherence to international law

The government asserted that all military actions are executed with meticulous care and strict compliance with international humanitarian norms. It highlighted that every precaution is taken to minimize collateral damage and prevent harm to civilians during airstrikes targeting Boko Haram positions.

N’Djamena challenges UN human rights report

The Chadian authorities strongly contested the findings of a UN Human Rights report, which suggested significant civilian losses following aerial operations by Chadian forces in the region. N’Djamena argued that these conclusions lack sufficient supporting evidence. Instead, the government underscored the pivotal role of defense and security forces in stabilizing the area, positioning them at the forefront of counterterrorism efforts.

In response to the controversy, the Chadian government urged an impartial and responsible assessment of the security situation. It reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding civilian populations and called for enhanced international cooperation to better coordinate efforts against extremist groups active in the Lake Chad Basin.

Ongoing commitment to counterterrorism despite diplomatic tensions

Amid escalating diplomatic tensions, Chadian authorities reiterated their determination to continue operations against Boko Haram. The government also defended the legitimacy and professionalism of its armed forces, emphasizing their role in a highly complex security environment.
