Strategic discussions on defense cooperation

During the Eurosatory defense exhibition in Paris, Chad’s Minister of National Defense, Veterans, and War Victims, General Issakha Malloua Djamouss, held high-level talks with his French counterpart, Defense Minister Catherine Vautrin. This meeting followed ongoing political exchanges between President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno of Chad and President Emmanuel Macron of France.

The agenda centered on bilateral defense relations and future security cooperation frameworks. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to upholding each other’s strategic interests and sovereignty, as stated by Chad’s Ministry of Defense.

The ministers explored ways to implement the recently signed letter of intent between the two countries. They emphasized building a partnership rooted in mutual trust and sustained dialogue to address modern security challenges.

Air capabilities and regional stability

Chad reiterated its dedication to a balanced and mutually advantageous defense partnership, crucial for regional stability and the enhancement of the Chadian Armed Forces’ operational readiness. Discussions highlighted air force cooperation as a key priority, with potential areas including joint training, intelligence sharing, and French support to upgrade Chad’s aerial capabilities.

French defense officials have expressed renewed interest in securing access to N’Djamena’s air base. A French officer noted this would enable rapid deployment and operational flexibility for Paris. A Chadian general acknowledged that French presence could bolster responses to emerging security threats across the Sahel.

Chadian authorities are actively seeking closer ties with France, citing dissatisfaction with security proposals from other international partners.
