After more than six decades of diplomatic engagement, Canada has officially inaugurated its inaugural embassy in Cotonou, Bénin. This significant event, held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, marks a pivotal moment in the long-standing relationship between the two nations. The formal opening ceremony was presided over by the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Anita Anand, during her working visit to Bénin. She was joined by her Béninese counterpart, Ms. Corinne Amori Brunet, alongside members of the diplomatic corps and Mr. Hugues Oscar Lokossou, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy and Finance, responsible for Mobilization of External Resources and Debt Management.
The establishment of a fully operational embassy in Cotonou represents a historic leap forward, underscoring the robust friendship shared by Canada and Bénin. It also reflects their mutual ambition to elevate bilateral cooperation to new, more dynamic levels. This new diplomatic presence is expected to significantly enhance political dialogue, facilitate more direct oversight of bilateral commitments, and solidify collaboration across various strategic sectors.
« Canada is committed to collaborating closely with Bénin, and today we are injecting fresh momentum into this vital relationship, » affirmed the Honorable Anita Anand, Canada’s Foreign Minister. Echoing this sentiment, Bénin’s Foreign Minister, Ms. Corinne Amori Brunet, emphasized that the embassy’s opening concretizes a growing rapprochement and an intensification of ties between Bénin and Canada. « Our cooperation is becoming richer and more diverse. It is increasingly investing in the economy, innovation, security, and human development – values that are deeply cherished by both Bénin and Canada, » highlighted the Béninese chief diplomat.
Earlier on the same Wednesday, Minister Anita Anand and Minister Corinne Amori Brunet formalized their commitment by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on political and diplomatic consultations. This crucial document establishes a permanent framework for ongoing dialogue, designed to deepen political engagement, ensure consistent monitoring of bilateral undertakings, and strengthen coordinated efforts on key regional and international issues.
A comprehensive working session also took place, bringing together Mr. Olushegun Adjadi Bakari, Minister of Tourism and Foreign Trade, responsible for Industry and Private Investment Promotion; Mr. Gildas Agonkan, Minister Delegate to the President of the Republic, responsible for National Defense; and Mr. Hugues Oscar Lokossou, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy and Finance, responsible for Mobilization of External Resources and Debt Management.
