Yaoundé — In a bid to dispel persistent rumors, Cameroon’s government has officially confirmed that President Paul Biya remains alive and continues to lead the nation, despite his prolonged absence from the country.
René Emmanuel Sadi, both Minister of Communication and government spokesperson, addressed the nation’s concerns during a press briefing, categorically stating that the president is “in good health” and has not resigned from office. While he acknowledged Biya’s recent medical procedure in Switzerland, Sadi clarified that the president is not hospitalized and is expected to return to Cameroon in the near future.
No power vacuum in Cameroon, insists government spokesperson
The government’s statement comes as a direct response to widespread speculation about a potential leadership crisis. Sadi emphasized that there is “no vacancy of power” at the state level, asserting that Cameroon’s institutions are functioning normally under the current administration. He pointed out that the Constitutional Council, the sole body authorized to declare a power vacuum, has not issued any such declaration.
The spokesperson provided additional details about Biya’s health, confirming that the president underwent a medical intervention recently but refrained from disclosing its nature. “The president is in Geneva, recovering, and will soon return to Cameroon,” Sadi stated, dismissing claims of instability or leadership uncertainty.

For over 56 days, President Biya has been in Switzerland, fueling rumors about his health and the country’s political stability.
