Transforming lives through sustainable water solutions

In a significant move to address water scarcity challenges, Cameroon Water Utilities (Camwater) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have formalized a partnership aimed at ensuring reliable access to potable water for refugees and host communities in the Minawao camp.

A strategic collaboration for water security

The agreement, signed in Yaoundé, brings together Camwater’s technical expertise in water infrastructure development with UNHCR’s humanitarian mission to protect and empower refugees. This initiative is part of the broader Minawao Camp Alternative Solutions Project, supported by the European Union, German Cooperation (GIZ), and UNHCR.

Under the terms of the partnership, Camwater will lead the design, construction, and monitoring of water supply systems, while UNHCR will continue its efforts to enhance refugee protection and resilience in collaboration with Cameroonian authorities.

Addressing critical water needs

The Far North region of Cameroon faces mounting pressure on water resources due to rapid population growth and climate variability. This partnership seeks to alleviate these challenges by improving water access for both refugees and local residents, fostering social cohesion and sustainable development.

Dr. Blaise Moussa, Director General of Camwater, and Ms. Yvette Muhimpundu, UNHCR Representative in Cameroon, jointly emphasized the transformative potential of this collaboration. Their commitment underscores a shared vision to create lasting solutions that extend beyond immediate humanitarian relief.

Building resilient communities

The project’s success hinges on integrated water management strategies that balance immediate needs with long-term sustainability. By leveraging Camwater’s infrastructure capabilities and UNHCR’s field experience, the initiative aims to set a benchmark for water access projects in humanitarian settings.
