Cameroon: inside Boko Haram’s campaign of persecution in the Far North

In a press release issued on September 18, the NGO Open Doors called on Christians to pray for Oumar, a victim of Boko Haram persecution in the Far North of Cameroon.

Ranked 37th in the Open Doors 2026 World Watch List of Christian persecution, Cameroon is being overwhelmed by violence, particularly in its Far North region. In this area, the presence of extremist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP poses a threat to Christians. These groups “threaten, kidnap and forcibly convert Christians to Islam,” the organization reports.

Oumar, whose story was told by the NGO in an article published on September 18, fell victim to a Boko Haram attack last January. Assailants stormed his village and killed more than twelve people, including the brother of his neighbor, a father of seven children.

“After they made me leave the town, I told them I would not go with them. I called for help, and that’s when they shot me,” the 20-year-old testified. Wounded in the leg, he was rushed to the hospital before undergoing surgery. However, the bullet could not be extracted by the medical team, which still causes Oumar pain today.

“I am waiting for God to help me in my suffering.”

Open Doors shared three prayer intentions for Oumar with Christians worldwide: thank God for protecting him from “this devastating attack,” ask Him to fully heal him as he continues to receive medical care, and also pray for “peace and deliverance throughout the entire Far North region of Cameroon.”
