Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the Burkinabè government has confirmed that more than 1.3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) successfully returned to their communities of origin by June 30, 2026. This significant achievement is attributed to the gradual enhancement of security across numerous areas that national forces have reclaimed.
Official figures indicate that these repatriations now encompass 1,034 distinct localities, a notable increase from the 871 reported at the close of 2025. At that earlier point, approximately 1.16 million displaced individuals had already made their way back to their permanent residences.
This crucial data emerged during the mid-year performance review conducted by the Ministry of Solidarity. As of the halfway mark for the 2026 operational year, the ministry has reported an execution rate of 46.06% against its committed objectives.
Furthermore, the assessment highlighted that over 480,000 vulnerable individuals received essential assistance during the initial six months of the year. Beneficiaries were provided with vital food aid, crucial basic necessities, and comprehensive support designed to facilitate their long-term recovery and reintegration.
Moreover, authorities underscored the urgent need to expedite housing rehabilitation efforts within the affected communities. They consider this measure paramount for ensuring the sustained voluntary return of populations and fostering their resettlement under stable and lasting conditions.
