Bénin’s new government sets strategic course and regular council meetings

On Thursday, May 28, 2026, the inaugural Council of Ministers for the 2026-2033 septennate convened under the leadership of Head of State Romuald Wadagni. This pivotal gathering established the core strategic directions for government initiatives over the upcoming seven-year term.

During the session, the Béninese President underscored to his cabinet members their fundamental duty: to serve the collective interest with unwavering rigor, responsibility, and exemplary conduct. Presidential directives mandate that government operations must be anchored in principles of sobriety, integrity, solidarity, and accountability, aiming to deepen the trust between the state and its populace.

Key priorities for this seven-year mandate include a determined fight against extreme poverty, a concerted effort to reduce social and territorial disparities, and the reinforcement of national security. The administration is committed to fostering a more balanced development across Bénin, ensuring a more equitable distribution of public investments throughout the nation.

Furthermore, this inaugural Council of Ministers formally adopted an updated operational framework for the Executive branch. This strategic reform is designed to enhance the coordination of public action and expedite decision-making processes.

Under the new structure, the Bénin Council of Ministers will now convene for its ordinary session on the first Wednesday of each month. The Interministerial Committee is scheduled to hold two monthly sessions, specifically on the first and third Mondays. Meanwhile, individual Cabinet Councils will be organized on an as-needed basis, tailored to the specific requirements of the various ministerial departments.

With the conclusion of this foundational meeting, the Béninese government for the 2026-2033 septennate officially embarks on its operational phase. Its comprehensive roadmap emphasizes institutional discipline, a commitment to performance, and a dedicated responsiveness to the social expectations of the citizenry.
