Benin strengthens emergency medical response with 600 new oxygen concentrators

The healthcare landscape in Benin is undergoing a significant transformation. On April 16, 2026, the Minister of Health, Professor Benjamin Hounkpatin, officially took delivery of 600 state-of-the-art oxygen concentrators, designed to enhance the life-saving capabilities of 23 medical facilities across the nation.

Advanced technology for respiratory emergencies

Acquired through UNICEF with financial backing from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, this equipment represents a total investment exceeding $205,450 (approximately 116 million CFA francs). These “10LPM single flow” devices are engineered to provide a continuous and reliable supply of oxygen, a critical resource for patients suffering from severe respiratory distress.

This massive distribution effort is specifically targeted at hospitals and clinics located within the departments of Alibori, Littoral, Atacora, Borgou, Donga, Couffo, and Atlantique.

A strategic move to lower maternal and infant mortality

Minister Benjamin Hounkpatin emphasized that this technical upgrade is a cornerstone of the national strategy to combat maternal, neonatal, and child mortality. He noted that ensuring oxygen is readily available is essential for providing equitable, high-quality healthcare to every citizen, regardless of their location.

“The availability of oxygen is of vital importance. This equipment is tangible proof of our commitment,” the Minister stated during the official ceremony.

Strengthening international health partnerships

The handover ceremony featured key figures including His Excellency Wei Zhang, the Chinese Ambassador, and Ousmane Niang, the UNICEF Resident Representative. Ambassador Zhang highlighted the strong bilateral ties between China and Benin, reaffirming Beijing’s commitment to supporting the local health sector.

The UNICEF representative pointed out that these tools, funded by individual contributors in China, will drastically improve the resilience of Benin’s medical infrastructure during critical emergencies. By modernizing the country’s technical resources, the government continues its mission to provide a more efficient and responsive public health service for all.
