Benin starts work on fourteen health centers and Ouidah maternity upgrade
A nationwide push to expand care
Benin’s government has taken a decisive step in its drive to modernize public health and narrow gaps in access to medical services. Meeting in the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, the executive approved contracts with the selected companies, clearing the way for construction to begin on fourteen health centers across the country, along with a full rehabilitation of the maternity unit at the Ouidah zone hospital.
Strengthening the health network where it matters most
The initiative is designed above all to bring health facilities closer to people living in rural and peri-urban areas. Beyond expanding capacity, the project calls for these structures to be upgraded medically so that the standard of care rises to the required health norms.
Which localities will benefit
Among the beneficiary areas are Kpakpamè, Savalou-Aguah, Kountori, Adjohoun, Tchi-Ahomadégbé, and Idigny. At the same time, the planned renovation of the Ouidah zone hospital maternity ward is expected to provide a modern, safe, and dignified setting for the care of pregnant women and newborns.
Strict oversight to keep the work on track
As part of the priority investments under the Government Action Program (PAG), the effort aims to reshape public health in Benin for the long term. To ensure deadlines and quality standards are met, the Council of Ministers instructed the relevant government members to maintain rigorous oversight in the field throughout the construction phase.
