Awaou Baco engages with small businesses in Alibori and Borgou
The Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises and Employment Promotion, Awaou Baco, concluded a two-day working visit to the Alibori and Borgou departments on July 28-29, 2026. The mission focused on assessing support programs for young entrepreneurs, artisans, farmers, and individuals with disabilities through the AZOLI initiative.
Connecting with local entrepreneurs across northern Benin
The first day of the tour began in Alibori, where Minister Baco met with local officials before heading to Malanville. In Malanville, she interacted with small business owners, mechanics, and rabbit farmers, discussing challenges and opportunities in their sectors.
In Nikki, the minister visited a vocational training center specializing in craftsmanship. She engaged directly with trainees and instructors, focusing on skill development and job placement prospects for graduates.
A working session in Kandi brought together young entrepreneurs to explore public programs supporting training, employment, and business creation. The exchanges highlighted the importance of accessible funding and mentorship for startups in the region.
AZOLI initiative strengthens support for youth and people with disabilities
The following day, the delegation traveled to Borgou, where Minister Baco first paid a courtesy visit to the regional prefect. In Parakou, she met with over 50 young participants in the AZOLI program, who were completing training sessions. Discussions centered on transitioning from learning to employment, with a focus on practical pathways to economic integration.
The visit also included a meeting with 46 people with disabilities trained in leatherwork and shoemaking. This segment of AZOLI is designed to empower participants with vocational skills that enhance financial independence and social inclusion.
Digital platforms simplify access to business support
The tour concluded with a stop at ASAFMA, a metalworking SME producing equipment for the agro-food industry. The company receives support from the Benin SME Development Agency, the Entrepreneurship Support Project, and the Benin Chamber of Crafts.
Minister Baco also visited Delika’s Tissage, an artisan workshop specializing in traditional fabric weaving and personalization. The owner showcased products rooted in local textile heritage, emphasizing cultural preservation alongside economic viability.
Throughout the visit, the minister encouraged entrepreneurs, artisans, and project leaders to utilize digital platforms such as SICA (www.sica.anpe.bj) and e-PME. These tools provide streamlined access to information on funding, business formalization, and professional integration programs.
In her closing remarks, Minister Baco urged aspiring business owners to remain resilient amid challenges. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing reforms and investments that foster youth and women’s entrepreneurship nationwide.
