• FC Barcelona wins the race for Gordon’s signature.

FC Barcelona has successfully secured the signing of Anthony Gordon, reaching a definitive agreement with Newcastle United for a transfer package reportedly worth around £69 million ($92 million). The La Liga powerhouse moved swiftly on Wednesday evening to conclude negotiations, fending off intense competition from top clubs across Europe to acquire one of the Premier League’s most dynamic wingers.

The 25-year-old talent had also drawn interest from Liverpool and Bayern Munich, with the German club reportedly making a late bid to disrupt the transfer. However, Gordon consistently expressed a strong desire to join Camp Nou, and personal terms were quickly settled. The winger is now en route to Catalonia for his medical assessment before linking up with Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for their World Cup preparations in Florida.

• A shrewd financial move and perfect sporting fit

This transfer represents a significant financial uplift for the former Everton player, who is expected to command a weekly salary of approximately £300,000. This substantial wage increase highlights FC Barcelona’s commitment to Gordon as the club, under Flick, seeks to bolster its attacking options for the upcoming season. Gordon arrives following an outstanding individual season where he netted 10 goals in the Champions League, a tally surpassed only by Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé.

The versatile England international can operate across the entire attacking line, a quality that particularly impressed the Blaugrana management, enabling him to provide formidable competition for Lamine Yamal and Raphinha. While the German coach is reportedly still weighing a permanent £26 million ($35 million) deal for Marcus Rashford, Gordon’s arrival provides the Catalan club with a long-term, potent offensive solution.

• Newcastle’s summer rebuild project begins.

For Newcastle United, parting ways with one of their most valuable assets marks a pivotal phase in Eddie Howe’s squad rebuilding efforts. Following a disappointing 12th-place finish in the Premier League, the Magpies face considerable pressure to execute a successful transfer window. General Manager David Hopkinson had previously stated the club would only sell « according to its own conditions », and the staggered payment structure agreed with Barcelona provides enhanced budgetary flexibility as the club aims to overhaul its roster.

By sanctioning Gordon’s departure before the official transfer window opens on June 15, Newcastle has proactively secured crucial funds and mitigated potential distractions that plagued their previous campaign.

• Drawing a line under Tyneside

This transfer concludes Anthony Gordon’s three-year tenure at St James’ Park, having initially joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 for a reported £40 million ($54 million). Relations between the club and the forward appeared to have strained during the final weeks of the recent season, with the winger excluded from the squad for the last six matches—a decision Eddie Howe attributed to a « long-term vision ». Gordon’s departure also brings an end to a period of personal uncertainty for the player, who had previously acknowledged feeling « unsettled for a while » after his proposed move to Liverpool fell through in 2024.
